In the spring of 1960, a group of Master Masons of Stokes Lodge #32 in Concord, NC met at the Masonic Temple to discuss the need of another lodge in the city of Concord. After much discussion it was decided that another lodge would be an asset to Masonry. On June 7, 1960, twenty or more Master Masons met to organize and select a Master, Senior Warden, and Junior Warden. Worshipful Brother Fred Baxter Lisk was selected as the first Master. All of the other officers were selected and appointed and the meeting was adjourned.
The second meeting was held on July 14, 1960 and the Master read the constitution and by-laws. It was requested and permission received from the surrounding lodges to organize. A motion was made and seconded that Article 12 of the constitution that the dues be raised from $10.00 to a maximum of $25.00. The motion passed and they then decided to petition the Grand Lodge for a Charter.
On September 15, 1960 the Most Worshipful Grand Master granted a dispensation to fifty-seven brethren to form Cabarrus Lodge U.D. The meeting was called to order and the Grand Secretary called out the list of brethren selected to serve as officers. The Grand Master installed the officers and the proclamation was made by the Marshal. The Grand Master delivered the dispensation and gavel of authority to the incoming Master. The bi-laws were read and adopted and the committees were appointed. The Master of Cannon Memorial Lodge presented Cabarrus Lodge U.D. with the altar Bible.
On May 6, 1961 at 7:30 PM, a Master Mason's Lodge was opened by the Grand Master for the purpose of the constitution of Cabarrus Lodge #720 in Concord NC. The Ceremony of Consecration was conducted by the Grand Master and the Officers of the Grand Lodge. The Grand Master installed the officers and ordered the Secretary to record in the minutes that the Charter of Cabarrus Lodge had been formally presented to the Master. The by-laws were read and adopted by the lodge.
Over the next year, seventeen men were elected to receive the degrees. Cabarrus Lodge started out with fifty-eight charter members and now has one hundred and seventy-four members. Twelve of the original fifty-eight charter members are still living today. Thirty-three of the forty-seven Past Masters are still living.
Most of this history was compiled by a Past Master some sixteen years ago.
